Job Description

Position Summary The Director of Disability Inclusive Culture will serve to actualize integrating disability as part of the inclusion, diversity, equity and belonging (IDBE) work throughout NYU. Through University-wide initiatives, the Director will promote an integrative, collaborative approach to transitioning the disability-friendly culture of NYU to one of even greater inclusivity and belonging with an emphasis on equity. Reporting to the Senior Vice President (SVP) for Global Inclusion, Diversity, & Strategic Innovation and Associate Provost for Strategy, this Director will work closely with the NYU university-wide Provostial Committee on Disability, Inclusion and Accessibility as well as The Center for Disability Studies. The incumbent will coordinate, augment and strengthen the ongoing work related to disability access, culture, equity, inclusion, and education across NYU by creating policies and programs that move the University beyond compliance to promoting accessibility for all, finding new opportunities to expand the full participation for people with disabilities at NYU. To promote and strengthen the aforementioned, the Director will work across disciplines and schools to advance a culture of disability inclusivity/ disability culture, as well as provide education and support across constituent groups, with a particular focus on faculty. Related work will include, but is not limited to, providing additional support for faculty with disabilities while setting strategic direction for fostering an IDBE organizational workplace culture that focuses on universal design and increased access for any persons with disabilities on NYU campuses. The individual will engage with stakeholders from across the University (including current and prospective faculty members, employees, students, alumni, or visitors). Working with internal and external stakeholders, the Director will work to promote cultural transformation relevant to research-based and evidence-best practices as well as cultural initiatives emerging from the disability community; develop and implement policies and procedures across the University; focus on universal design to promote full accessibility to NYU classes, events, web-based services, buildings and facilities, and programs and services. In support of the advancement of University IDBE goals as they intersect with disability studies, and in compliance with Section 504 and the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Director will partner with the NYU Office of Equal Opportunity, the Moses Center for Students with Disabilities, the Center for Disability Studies, the Office of General Counsel, Facilities and Construction Management, University Human Resources, and other University personnel/departments as necessary and provide subject-matter expertise and consultative services. Qualifications Required Education: Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Special Education, Counseling, Social Work, Psychology, or related field. Preferred Education: Ph.D. in related field. Required Experience: 7+ years of progressively responsible experience developing and delivering programming and services to diverse constituencies with a particular focus on those with disabilities. Extensive conversation and program facilitation experience in small and large groups for multiple levels of audience, from students to senior leaders. Experience leading functional and cross-functional team projects with shared objectives. Must have a strong history of developing and implementing action oriented innovative models of practice, approach and policy for promoting disability culture. Must have experience working with academic and business leadership to deliver a University wide impact. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent written and oral communication, presentation, negotiation, influence, and consensus building skills. Ability to interact effectively with diverse populations at all levels. Subject-matter expertise to successfully work across a diverse spectrum including the nuances of intersectionality (intersections of gender, sexual identity, SES, religion, age, race, ethnicity, equity, etc.) for persons with disabilities. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to evaluate experiences, programs, processes and look for continuous improvement opportunities. Must have knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations and higher education trends that pertain to persons with disabilities (i.e., Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, Americans with Disabilities Act, etc.).
